Fall 2021 Testing

Fall 2021 Testing

The Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) and the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) are typically administered in the spring. Due to the pandemic, the tests were postponed until this fall. The fall tests will be reflective of the grade students were in during the 2020-21 school year to assess their prior-year of learning. Students will take the assessment again for their current grade level next spring.

For Example:

  • A student enrolled in grade 4 in fall 2021 will take the grade 3 Smarter Balanced assessments in the fall. They will take the grade 4 Smarter Balanced assessments next spring
  • A student enrolled in grade 9 in fall 2021 will take the grade 8 Smarter Balanced assessments and WCAS.

Assessments are one way to know how students are doing in these subjects. Clear, understandable test scores help students, teachers, and parents work together to adjust their approach and better meet students’ needs. They also provide important information to understand how districts and the state are doing in meeting all students’ learning needs.

Fall Test Design

State assessments will be shorter than usual this fall to accommodate the unique circumstances we are in while still ensuring results are maximally useful. English language arts, math and science assessment are designed to be completed in a single online session, though students can take all the time they need. You can also learn how about the reports that each student will receive:

Additional Resources

Here are resources you can use to learn more about the assessments and ways to use the results to support your student:

Testing for Students Enrolled in Remote Programs

The state test cannot be administered remotely, from home. Students who are enrolled in a remote elementary classroom or Highline Virtual Academy have the option of taking the test in person at a scheduled time. Testing sites will follow all health and safety guidelines implemented in school classrooms. We will have a testing location in both the north and south end of the district.

Please take this survey to share your interest in taking this test at one of our testing sites in person. Once you have confirmed, you will be notified about the location, date and time. Please complete the survey by Monday, October 4.

Assessments help teachers and families know how students are doing in English, math and science.

Students whose families do not wish to have their child(ren) participate will be required to complete the opt-out process. Please see the guidance for opting out below.

Remote Testing Survey

Opting Out

Families and students have the right to refuse participation in state assessments. The policy requires parents to communicate they do not want their child(ren) to take the assessment and their reason why.

Requests should specifically list any tests they wish to opt-out of – SBA ELA, SBA math, WCAS, WIDA, and/or WA-AIM.  Please refer to the tests being administered this fall in the table above.
