Introducing Standards-Based Grading

Introducing Standards-Based Grading

We want to tell you about a new instructional approach we are using across Highline: Standards-Based Grading (SBG).

Standards-based grading measures your student's progress toward the learning goals for their grade, as determined by the state of Washington.

Grading is not based on behavior or how long it takes to demonstrate learning. The grade is based on how close your student meets the learning goals. It may take students the entire unit or course meet a standard.

Our grading web section has more information about SBG. We encourage you to review this information online to learn more. This web section includes information about:

  • Commonly used SBG words
  • A rubric, the tool teachers use to monitor student progress
  • Assignment types
  • Benefits of SBG
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Resources for supporting students
