Weekly COVID-19 Test Available for High School Summer School Students

Weekly COVID-19 Test Available for High School Summer School Students

Optional Screening Stars July 19

To maintain the health and safety of our students, we are offering additional protocols beyond masking and social distancing which will allow safe participation in summer school and athletic programs. Starting July 12, we will offer weekly COVID-19 tests for students participating in summer school at Mount Rainier High School (MRHS) and students participating in summer athletics programming.

In collaboration with the Washington State Department of Health, Highline is participating in a state-funded effort to provide voluntary COVID-19 testing that will further help contain the virus, protect our communities, and keep students and teachers safe and healthy for our return to in-person learning.

Testing for students in summer school will occur July 12, 19 and 26 at MRHS while students are attending summer school. Testing for students participating in summer athletics programming will occur while students are attending summer practices. We are piloting this program and is only available for students attending summer school at MRHS and participating in summer athletics.

To conserve resources and make the process more efficient, we will be conducting batched testing. Samples will be grouped together in the lab process to produce one overall result--positive or negative. Batched results will not have names or personally identifiable information.

TESTING PROCESS

We will be using Atlas Genomics Lab to process our batched COVID-19 tests. The testing process will require students and staff to self-administer the nasal swab sample, while a trained staff member observes.

BATCH TEST RESULTS

Test results will be provided to Highline within 24 hours. If a batch result is negative, the students and staff in that cohort will continue to attend school activities and will not be notified of the test results. If a batch result is positive, everyone in that cohort will be notified of the positive batch result and need to be quarantined. Students and staff from that cohort will then participate in a rapid COVID-19 test the next day.

FOLLOW-UP TESTING

Students and staff in a cohort that tests positive will receive information about the time, location and other details for the follow-up test with at least 24-hour notice.

This follow-up test is important as it allows the Highline to conduct contact tracing and notify those who have been exposed. This will help minimize the spread of COVID-19, especially with the more infectious variants present in our region.

CONSENT

This is a voluntary program. Parents/guardians must complete the consent form for students to participate. Here are links to the consent form:

Fully vaccinated students do not need to participate in COVID-19 screening testing. A student is considered fully vaccinated 2 weeks after their final dose (e.g., 2 weeks after the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna, 2 weeks after a single dose of Johnson & Johnson). Testing is recommended if a vaccinated individual is symptomatic.

Unvaccinated students can choose not to participate in COVID-19 testing.
